About the department
The Department of Vascular Pathophysiology is primarily focused on comprehensive monitoring of functional, structural, and molecular changes in the vascular system under normal and pathological conditions. Functional studies are carried out at the level of in vitro and in vivo experiments. We focus on monitoring the vasoactive properties of isolated large (supply) and small (resistance) vessels using the method of measuring changes in isometric tension (in vitro). At the level of in vivo experiments, we monitor the integrated response of the cardiovascular system (invasive measurement of blood pressure, heart rate, pulse wave determination) as well as blood flow through a selected vessel using a perivascular ultrasound system. Structural changes are studied using light microscopy (vessel wall thickness and area, immunohistochemistry). At the level of molecular changes, the expression of proteins involved in the regulation of blood pressure and cardiovascular disorders is studied, using the immunofluorescence and fluorescence microscopy we monitor the localisation of proteins and enzymes within the vascular wall and perivascular adipose tissue.
